PAT KELLEY

In the Moment
(Artsong Music)

Guitarist Pat Kelley drives a contemporary mood with his talented quintet. Saxophonist Andy Suzuki,
organist Rob Whitlock, electric bassist Ernest Tibbs, and drummer John Ferraro see to it that the
guitarist's smooth delivery travels along the roads he's selected time and again. This is Kelley's eighth
recording as leader. Seamless phrases and satin-smooth articulation tell the stories.
His guitar interprets seven originals and one standard. "Rapid Transit" and "Jungle Highway" tear it up, while ballads such as "Lover's Waltz" and "Mother and Daughter" provide warm, sunny afternoons. "Walkin' With Grace" features tenor saxophone and guitar amid pleasant surroundings. The double entendre posed by "grace" applies from both sides, since Kelly's laid-back composition mellows leisurely to his swinging style. "It's You Or No One" surges up-tempo with a familiar, straight- ahead charm. Organ, saxophone, and bass solo often throughout the session, providing this impressive guitarist with a fine setting in which to showcase his admirable jazz chops.
