Review from Jazziz Magazine (issue March 2003)
To look at guitarist Pat Kelley on the cover of his latest CD, In the Moment (Artsong Music), you might think he were in a rockabilly band, or even actor John Cusack. But in setting up his home studio in Los Angeles so that his band could record in the truest "live" sense - no audience, but no headphones or overdubs, either - Kelley shows that his jazz pedigree isn't an act. The organic-sounding In the Moment lives up to it's title, as the guitarist shows influences from Wes Montgomery to Pat Martino to George Benson in the opening swing of "Jungle Highway" and the entrancing "Lover's Waltz". Bassist Ernest Tibbs plays an evocative solo on "Minor Sixth Sense", and saxophonist Andy Suzuki, keyboardist Rob Whitlock, and drummer John Ferraro shine on other standout originals ("Rapid Transit", "Where We Live") and the Julie Styne/Sammy Cahn standard "It's You Or No One".
